Terms and Conditions of Use and Submission Guidelines: We welcome both short story and poetry submissions from writers who normally reside in York Region. Children under age 18 must have a parent or legal guardian’s written permission to submit their stories and/or poems and such permission must accompany the stories and/or poems or they will not be considered. We will accept multiple submissions based on these limitations: We welcome both short story and poetry submissions from writers who normally reside in York Region. We will accept multiple submissions based on these limitations: two short stories per writer per 3-month period; five poems per writer per 3-month period. Three-month periods are defined as follows: Jan.-Mar., Apr.-Jun., Jul.-Sep., Oct.-Dec. Stories and poems chosen for publication will be the final decision of our judging panel. Prior to publication, we reserve the right to edit for spelling, word repetition, incorrect grammar and syntax, incorrect punctuation, improper formatting and other issues related to clarity. Guidelines for submitting short stories are as follows: - You must email your work to our community liaison either as a Microsoft Word document (the file extension should be .doc) or as a plain text document (file extension should be .txt). Please use 12-point Times Roman with one line between paragraphs. - Word count should be no more than 2,000 words. - All submissions should include the author's full name, mailing address, phone number, email address, title of the piece, and total word count. At the end of the submission, please include a short (i.e. one or two sentence) bio of yourself. York Region Newspaper Group, a division of Metroland Printing, Publishing & Distributing Ltd. and its parent, subsidiaries, divisions, and affiliated entities (the “Metroland Group”), has the right to edit and/or alter any submission. The Metroland Group reserves the right not to use the submission at all and/or to use as much or as little of the story and/or poem as they choose. By submitting your stories and/or poems, for good and valuable consideration, the sufficiency and receipt of which you hereby acknowledge, you hereby grant to the Metroland Group a non-exclusive, perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide licence to use, reproduce, modify, edit, adapt, syndicate, create derivative works from, license, print, distribute and otherwise exploit the materials you submit, or any portion thereof, as incorporated in any of the Metroland Group divisions or publications, in any manner and in any medium or forum, whether now known or hereafter devised, without making payment to you or any third party. In addition, you acknowledge and agree that you have waived any moral rights in your materials. You represent and warrant to the Metroland Group that you have the full legal right, power and authority to grant to the Metroland Group the licence provided for herein, that you own or control the complete exhibition rights and other rights to the materials you submitted for the purposes contemplated in this licence, that your materials are original, and that neither the materials nor the exercise of the rights granted herein shall infringe upon or violate the right of privacy or right of publicity of, or constitute a libel or slander against, or violate any common law or any other right of, any person or entity. You agree to release the Metroland Group from any liability associated with the publication of your submission. You agree to indemnify, defend and hold harmless the Metroland Group, their licensees, successors and assigns, and each of their officers, agents and employees from all liabilities or losses, including, without limitation, reasonable attorneys’ fees, arising out of or related to the Metroland Group’s exercise of the rights granted herein.
